Moorish Fortresses Galleries

The Alhambra : In college I took a class on Islamic Art & Literature at least in part because it sounded exotic and interesting.  (To be honest, it was more because it fulfilled two requirements and allowed me to graduate on time.)  The Alhambra in Granada, Spain was one of the examples of moorish architecture we looked at, so I made a point of traveling down to the sleepy little town to have a look.  It was well worth the trip.

Castelo dos Mouros : Though named a castle (the name translates as "Moorish Castle"), Castelo dos Mouros is, and apparently always did function as, more of a combination fortress and lookout for the most northern point of Muslim expansion in Portugal.  And I wanted to group this with the Alhambra in southern Spain.

Even reaching the remains of this fortress is a hike, and the highest points are a steep climb, but the view you are rewarded with is well worth the effort.  Once at the highest point, you can see that this was and still is an excellent lookout point.
